Social Action Posters
Social Action Interactive Posters can describe any social action project that
authors participate in and wish to share with other members of the CHI
community. This CHI '95 activity is sponsored by the SIGCHI Special
Interest Area on Social Action.
Review Process
Good posters allow viewers to assess their interest in the work at a glance
and to easily glean the main points of the work. They also stimulate
discussion. Reviewers of Social Action posters will be concerned with the
following questions:
- Does the poster describe a social action project clearly?
- Does it offer resources through which the viewer can find out more
information, carry out a similar project, or make a contribution?
We are less interested in position statements or "soapbox" posters. This
session is intended to help us learn how to increase our effectiveness in
concrete, action-oriented ways.
Social Action posters do not require innovation, technology, or analysis (of
course, all of these are quite welcome). They are intended to communicate
how members of the human-computer interaction community are attempting
to improve conditions in the other communities in which they are also
members. If your social action work involves technology that is easy to
demonstrate, or you have a prototype about which you wish to obtain
feedback, we will work with you to arrange technical support.
Format
Summary
Prepare a two-page summary containing title and authors,
contact information, keywords, abstract, and text describing the poster
content. This summary must be prepared in the
Conference Proceedings format and will be published in the CHI '95 Conference
Companion if the poster is accepted.
Mock-Up
Also prepare a mock-up of the actual poster. The mock-up is a
graphic layout of how the poster will be presented on the display space,
along with samples of each component to be displayed. This can be a
sketch; however, a reduced image of the intended poster is preferred.
Upon Acceptance
Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-January, 1995.
The two-page summaries of accepted social action posters will be published
in the CHI '95 Conference Companion. Note that because of the late
submission deadline there will be no opportunity to prepare new versions of
the summaries, so your submission material must be prepared carefully.
Electronic versions of accepted social action posters
will be published on a CD-ROM. Details on how to submit electronic
summaries will be sent with notices of acceptance. The electronic versions
are due
February 17, 1995.
At the conference, interactive poster presenters are provided a 1.1 meter
high by 2.3 meter wide (44x92 inches) display space (and possibly an
enclosed videotape viewer or enclosed slide viewer, if required). If the
poster requires a tape recorder the presenter will be expected to provide this.
Presenters are required to be available at their posters during designated
presentation times. AV support will be provided only during the scheduled
poster presentation session.
Checklist for Submissions
Every year some submissions are returned without review because the
authors failed to follow the guidelines established by the conference
committee. Don't let this happen to you! Please follow the steps in this
checklist in preparing your submission, and double-check that you have met
all the requirements before sending it.
- Read the General Submission Instructions.
- Note that submissions must be in English, and that electronic mail or
FAX submissions will not be accepted.
- Fill out the Standard Cover Sheet.
- Fill out the Planning Information Sheet.
- Prepare the two-page poster summary in the
Conference Proceedings format. Prepare the mock-up.
- Be sure that your submission contains no proprietary or confidential
material. Submission of video or pictures of identifiable people should be
done only with the understanding that responsibility for the collection of
appropriate permissions rests with the submitter, not CHI '95.
- Collect the Standard Cover Sheet, the Planning Information Sheet,
the two-page summary, and the mock-up, in the order given, in a packet,
and make two copies. Use 8.5 x 11 inch or A4 paper.
- Make sure each copy of the packet is STAPLED, not loose or held
by clips.
- In addition, send one original, camera-ready copy of the two-page
poster summary. It should not be printed double-sided, and it should not be
stapled.
- You may include a self-addressed reply postcard, which will be
mailed to acknowledge receipt of your submission.
- Send the original poster summary plus the two copies of your
submission packet, and the reply postcard, to one of the Social Action
Posters Co-Chairs at the Send To address.
Be sure to allow enough
time for your submission to arrive by
the indicated Deadline.
