Frequently-Asked Questions about CHI '95 Interactive Posters & Short Papers

Q: "When is the submission deadline? Can I get an extension?"

A: No!

We cannot extend the deadline no matter who you are and no matter how good an excuse you have. Your submission MUST be received at one of the two mailing addresses in the Call for Participation by December 16, 1994 by 5pm PST. We have so many submissions that we cannot accomodate delays.

Q: "Do you really mean that?"

A: Yes!

We really do have a strict deadline. Even if your mailing service promised to get your letter to us on time, we will still reject your submission if it is not in our office by the end of regular office hours (5pm PST) on December 16, 1994. If you want to be sure to get your submission in, send it early with a few extra days as a safety margin. Short Papers are for "late breaking news" but don't be later than 5pm PST December 16, 1994.

Q: "What if I do not have a laser printer, so I cannot generate the required format?"

A: Rent one, be friends with somebody who has one. Find a copying business that offers the service if you bring them a disk. If you really cannot afford it, then use the printer you have for the submission. In any case, you have to stay within the 2-page limit.

Q: "What size paper should I use?"

A: You can use on any standard letter-sized paper, such as for example A4 or 8.5x11 inch paper. Please keep the size of the printed text to the proceedings format no matter what size paper you use for printing this text.

Q: "What if my e-mail of the machine-readable file bounces? Or I'm not sure my e-mail will arrive on time?"

A: Don't worry. It is the receipt of the hardcopy 6 copies of the poster or short paper that counts as your submission. As long as we receive the hardcopy printed version of the submission on time, you are OK.

Q: "Should I (may I) include figures in my poster summary or short paper?"

A: Yes, you can if you feel it clarifies your point. You do not have to. If you do include pictures, photos, figures, charts, tables, or graphs, they are included in the 2-page limit. Poster summaries or short papers cannot exceed that limit regardless of figures, refererences, or any other reason.

Q: "Can I obtain the book containing posters and short papers from CHI'94?"

A: Yes, you can purchase the CHI'94 Conference Companion from ACM. The phone number for the order department is 800-342-6626. If you're calling from the New York area or outside the US, the phone number is 212-626-0500.

Q: "Is the 2-page summary we submit a summary of the short paper, or the short paper itself?"

A: The 2-page submission IS the short paper itself. No more than 2 papers per poster or short paper can be published. If accepted, the 2 pages submitted will be published as is.

Q: "If my poster is accepted, what is the time obligation I can expect? When do I have to physically be at my poster?"

A: We expect the posters to be on display May 9 through May 11. We are not yet sure the exact time authors will be able to start setting up their posters, but it will probably be Monday afternoon or evening. Authors will be responsible for taking down their posters on Thursday afternoon. Authors will be required to be at their posters on Wednesday, May 10 from 3:30-4:30, between the two afternoon sessions.

Q: "If accepted, what, if any, A/V (audio/visual equipment) will be provided for my poster by the conference?"

A: The Call for Participation says that the conference might possibly provide some A/V for posters. Unfortunately it has since been decided that we cannot afford to offer this. We will not be able to provide power either (as that also costs money in the convention center). If presenters want to bring any battery-powered equipment (such as laptop computers) during the poster session, they are welcome to.

Q: "If my poster or short paper is accepted, will I receive any funding for travel, hotel, or conference registration fee?"

A: No. No funding of any kind is provided for authors. If your poster or short paper is accepted, but you cannot attend, if possible, you may ask another person from your company or institution to present the work. Please let us know if this situation occurs.

Q: "What if I have additional questions?"

A: Please send mail to us at chi95-short-papers@sigchi.acm.org and we will answer you as soon as we can. As the submission deadline nears, if we get lots of questions, we may not be able to respond to them all as quickly as we'd like, so please try to avoid preparing your submission at the last minute.
